The Life We Long For
In the last few days I have been thinking about why a lot of us seem to go on in life and yet experience so little of peace and joy. We are surrounded by so many things in life: mounting pressures, deadlines to keep, bills to pay, family to care, grief to mourn, frustration to fight, depression to drown, and so on. Are you wondering if you can ever experience life in all its fullness? Will there be a new door to walk in? A hope to look forward to? I must say, “Yes."
In Christ Jesus we are never too far from His redeeming hand. The other day I heard a friend of mine tell me a story about two birds perched on a branch and having a conversation. One bird told the other bird, “I don’t know why human beings are so worried and anxious in life. I guess they don’t know we have a heavenly Father who takes care of us.” Isn’t that true that the birds of the air are taken care by our Father in heaven? How much more He will take care of us! And you who are so anxious.
When God created the Garden of Eden he caused a river to water the garden says Genesis 2:10. That River watered the garden. Adam and Eve had that water. Our life needs that River to water us. Without that water flowing in our life we end up thirsty and our longings get desperate. But thanks be to God, that River of life is here with us.
When Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well, He said if only she knew that He was the river of life she would have no need to draw the water from the well of this world. John 4: 10 says Jesus is the living water.
When we are thirsty we can drink from Jesus. When our hearts get empty and our soul feels sullen and dry we can turn to Jesus to drink from Him.
In Rev 21: 6 it says, “And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.” Christ is the fountain of the water of life. And in Rev 22: 1-2 it says, “And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.”
This pure river of water of life is available to us through faith in Christ. You can have a drink from it now. All He needs is your thirst. Are you thirsty in your heart? Thirsting for a deeper connection in life. Here it is for you. “For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty.” Isa 44: 3. Receive the water of life from Jesus. Let Him quench your thirst. In Isa 12: 3, it says, “Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation”. This river of life is open to us.
No matter where you are in life, drink from Jesus. Drink as much as you want. Jesus fills us like nothing else can. The deepest emptiness of life and the recurrent ache in our hearts can be satisfied by JESUS.
